Continence is the ability to control and direct sexual desires, or concupiscence (strong desire, especially sexual desire) of the flesh, and their consequences. It is a part of the virtue of temperance, which is about moderating physical desires. Continence is also defined as abstaining from even the licit gratifications of marriage. In Catholic theology, continence is a commonly mentioned virtue.
