A Contronym is a word that carries meanings that can be used in contradictory ways.

Examples

  • "Off" - Turn the light off, or, the alarm started going off.
  • "Dust" - Take particles off of a ceiling fan, or, put particles on crops.
  • "Progress" - to move forward away from tyranny, or, to move backward toward tyranny.
