David Alan "Dave" Brat (born July 27, 1964) is a strong conservative who served as the Republican Congressman for Virginia's 7th District. Brat shocked the nation with his historic defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the June 2014 Republican primary after being outspent 40 to 1. Prior to politics, he was a Director of Economics at Randolph–Macon College.[1] His campaign message was simple, run on the Republican party platform that Cantor had ignored. In the 2014 Midterm Elections, Brat defeated his fellow faculty member Democrat Jack Trammell.
Brat was defeated in the 2018 general election, a bad year for House Republicans overall.[2] He was later hired as the dean of Liberty University's business school.[3]
David Brat's upset victory over Eric Cantor led to the creation of the verb Cantorize.
Personal life
David Brat is married with two children and is a professed Christian.
