A dirty bomb is a radiological weapon whose use is to spread radioactive material around an area. Dirty bombs have received significant attention from intelligence services following 9/11, with the possibility that terrorists could obtain radioactive sources (eg from old nuclear reactors or depleted uranium shells) and use them in an attack. Although dirty bombs have less immediate casualties compared to conventional or nuclear weapons, they generate fear and render an area uninhabitable.
