Divestiture is the selling of an asset or part of a business to an independent entity, usually to end all ownership of that asset or part of a business by the original owner.

In energy industries, divestiture or stripping off is most commonly associated with spinning-off generation assets so they are no longer owned by the shareholders that own the transmission and distribution assets.
