Donald L. "Don" Carcieri (born December 16, 1942) is the Governor of the U.S. state of Rhode Island and a member of the Republican Party. Governor Carcieri and the Democratic-dominated General Assembly have been at odds on a number of issues. In 2005, both houses of the Rhode Island General Assembly passed a bill legalizing medical marijuana. Carcieri vetoed the bill, but the state lawmakers overrode Carcieri by a large margin.
During his two terms in office Carcieri has fought big labor. In September 2009 Governor Carcieri announced he is preparing to layoff 1,000 government employees that the state can no longer afford, which has resulted in criticisms from unions.[1]
