2016 election and transition
As U.S. President
Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2017, giving one of the strongest inauguration addresses in American history.[1][2][3] His first bill signed as president was to allow retired general and Defense Secretary nominee James Mattis to be confirmed.[4] Trump had a very busy and productive first week, undoing Obama's legacy and instituting conservative executive orders.[5][6][7] He had already made a reasonably large impact by his 50th day in office.[8] President Trump accomplished many of his campaign promises by his 100th day in office, and he had already made significant progress by then, most notably by reducing regulations, enforcing American immigration laws, and appointing and having the Senate confirm his Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch.[9][10][11] In his first 100 days as president, Trump signed the most pieces of legislation of any president since Harry Truman and more executive orders than any previous president.[12] By his 100th day, it was clear that Trump had disrupted the liberal political establishment consensus.[13] The Trump Administration was able to achieve numerous accomplishments by its first year in office,[14] and it kept many of its promises.[15]
According to Reuters in late September 2017, President Trump had "begun to reshape American life in ways big and small."[16] He undid many of Barack Obama's executive orders and worked to undo his entire political legacy.[17] Not only did President Trump act as a disruptor, but he "set in motion an administration arguably more conservative than Ronald Reagan’s."[18] In 2018, President Trump continued advancing a conservative agenda, this time focusing on the more nationalistic portions of it,[19] and he continued undoing Obama Administration policies.[20]
A poll taken shortly before the 100th day of Trump's presidency indicated that 96% of his supporters would have voted for him again had an election been held that day.[21] A May 2017 poll showed Trump with 98% support among Republican military veterans and 54% overall.[22] Similar polls taken mainly around the same time gave the same results.[23] Additionally, a Pew Research poll indicated that over three-fourths of "white evangelical Protestants" approved of Trump's performance.[24] These people, as well as members of the Tea Party Movement,[25] did not believe the media and left-wingers in their war against President Trump. Evangelical Christians stood with President Trump, as seen in August 2017 when nearly every evangelical advisor to the president remained in their positions after Trump made politically incorrect comments related to white supremacism, while business and arts advisors resigned over the controversy and establishment Republicans criticized him.[26] A POLITICO/Morning Consult poll taken just before the one-year anniversary of the 2016 presidential election found that 82% of Trump's voters would vote for him again.[27] By one year into his presidency, Trump's base – as well as traditional conservative blue-collar Democrats – continued to strongly support him.[28] By Trump's first year in office, his support among black people doubled despite claims of "racism" manufactured by the Left.[29]
It was reported on June 10, 2017, that President Trump had signed 37 bills into law, more than each of the previous four presidents, and the U.S. House had passed 158 bills, "making it the most productive in the modern-era," according to GOP House leaders.[30] Overall, the legislature was relatively productive by mid-2017.[31] An August 2017 Pew Research Center study found that the 115th Congress was more productive than any other Congress since 2007 and had the fifth highest count of substantive bills signed into law in the past 30 years.[32] Congress, however, only passed parts of President Trump's conservative legislative agenda,[33] and Pew reported in January 2018 that the 115th Congress was the fourth least productive in three decades, though the study did not include 20 bills passed by Congress that President Trump did not sign by January 1.[34]

Due to his promotion and support of conservative, America First[35] policies, President Trump faced large opposition from the Left and the establishment,[36][37] including from within the government bureaucracy.[38] The Trump Administration was the victim of numerous leaks of information, many of which threatened U.S. national security – it was reported in July 2017 that leaks occurred once a day on average,[39] and Trump faced seven times more leaks than Obama or Bush II did.[40] The Russia probe headed by Independent Counsel and former FBI Director Robert Mueller was founded to have hired investigators extremely biased against President Trump.[41] Left-wing federal courts also blocked many Trump Administration actions, including President Trump's executive orders regarding sanctuary cities and immigration,[42] and Democrat attorneys general were extremely active against the Trump Administration,[43] suing it nearly 50 times in 2017 alone.[44]
After his election, left-wingers labeled themselves as the "resistance" against Trump.[45] As a testament to the deep opposition and hatred towards him by the left-wing, at least 217 violent protestors were arrested in Washington D.C. on Inauguration Day.[46][47] Left-wingers committed or advocated for many other acts of violence against President Trump or his supporters.[48][49][50] It was reported in early February 2017 that 12,000 tweets already had called for Trump's assassination.[51] The mainstream media helped promote such violence.[52] In addition to domestic opposition, President Trump, and by extension, the United States, was strongly opposed by non-Americans compared to the Obama Administration, despite a majority of non-Americans believing Trump to be a strong leader.[53]
In addition to the above, Senate Democrats unduly delayed Trump's nominees at historic and unprecedented proportions[54] – by February 8, 2017, only George Washington had fewer cabinet nominees confirmed by this length of time into his presidency.[55] Trump's last cabinet secretary was confirmed on April 27, 2017,[56] and Trump's last cabinet-level member assumed office on May 15, 2017.[57] The GOP establishment also blocked President Trump's conservative agenda.[58]
President Trump was still able to implement new policies and roll back Obama's policies despite the opposition against him,[59] which served as a distraction from the changes being made.[60]
