A Dynasty is an era marked by the succession of rulers belonging to the same family. For a considerable part of history, regions have been reigned by successive dynasties; as such it is convenient for historians to consider periods as frameworks of successive dynasties.

Dynasty may also refer to the ruler's family in the aforementioned definition.
