When the 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, at least 220,000 people lost their lives, and millions were displaced from their homes. By contrast, 15,000 people died in the 2011 9.0-magnitude Japanese earthquake. However, much more attention was paid by middle-class Westerners to the Japanese earthquake.
