The Rt Hon. Sir Edmund Barton was the first Prime Minister of Australia, and had been in politics in the New South Wales colonial parliament and involved with the Federal Convention which led to the federation of the Australian colonies.

Barton also led a delegation to London to oversee the passage of the Constitution Bill through the British Parliament, which became Australia's constitution.
