Elaine Chao (born March 26, 1953; an immigrant from Taiwan who arrived in America at age 8) is the 18th United States Secretary of Transportation under U.S. President Donald Trump. She was the Secretary of Labor in the cabinet of the Bush administration. She is the first Asian-American woman to be appointed to a U.S. Cabinet position. From 1996 to her appointment in 2001, she was a Distinguished Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, and from 1992 to 1996, she was president of the United Way of America. She is married to Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
