Elaine Lan Chao (born March 26, 1953; an immigrant from Taiwan who arrived in America at age 8) is the 18th United States Secretary of Transportation under U.S. President Donald Trump. She was the Secretary of Labor in the cabinet of the Bush administration. Chao is the first Asian-American woman to be appointed to a U.S. Cabinet position.
Chao was the president of the United Way of America from 1992 to 1996. In addition, from 1996 to 2001, Chao was a Distinguished Fellow at The Heritage Foundation, where she concentrated on jobs, employment, trade, federal spending and workforce issues.[1]
Personal life
Chao is married to current Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
