Emancipation

Emancipation stands for setting someone free. Classically it means setting a slave free. (See Emancipation Proclamation.) In family law, it means recognizing a minor as an adult. A court that does this, "frees" the child from needing any adult to make decisions, open bank accounts, or enter into contracts.
