Energy exploration is the search for oil and natural gas underground. A major technique is to conduct a seismic survey to determine the depth of rock layers that may contain hydrocarbons. Prior to 1980, geologist would look for porous rock formations and avoid drilling in shale or other non-porous layers. However, with the advent of fracking, oil and gas is produced from shale, bringing energy exploration to many areas of the United States for the first time.
