Ernest Augustus I (1771 – 1851) became King of Hanover in 1837, while his niece Victoria (daughter to his elder brother Edward who had died in 1820) inherited the throne of the United Kingdom. Their predecessor was King William IV - another of Ernests's elder brothers and therefore uncle to Victoria. Thus, the personal union of the United Kingdom and Hanover, which had lasted since 1712, was split.
