A thatched pub, the Williams Arms at Wrafton, near Braunton, North Devon, England. Click on the picture above and you will notice that the patrons of the pub are overweight. Britain is a land of godless, fat, heavy drinkers!

On August 30, 2022, The Guardian reported concerning British pubs: "Thousands of pubs face closure without urgent government support to soften the blow from soaring energy bills, the beer industry has said, putting jobs at risk in a sector still battling to recover from the Covid pandemic."[1]

Reuters reported about Britain's energy crisis: "More than 400 British pubs closed down last year in the wake of pandemic lockdowns, according to a British real estate analysis company, and that number could rocket.[2]

The Daily Mail reported on September 2, 2022: "Pubs are already turning out the lights as soaring energy bills hit the ailing hospitality sector - with last orders at 8.30pm and closing by 9pm, food service being stopped and skeleton teams running venues to avoid financial ruin. Beer gardens are even being shut at night to save costs."[3]

First, the pestilence of Covid-19 rained down on British pubs and now this! Oh, godless British drunkards, feel the sting!

Scripture teaches the sovereignty of God. For example, God can: lift up his hedge of protection[4]; actively change ruler's/men's hearts (Proverbs 21:1; Exodus 9:12); allow men to reap the consequences of their own decisions/devices (Proverbs 1:24-32; Romans 1:26-29)[5]; or divinely intervene in the affairs of men in a dramatic way.[6]

Professor Terence Stephenson in Measuring Up, a report on the nation's obesity crisis by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) called Britain "the fat man of Europe".[7][8][9] See: Godless Britain is the fat man of Europe and United Kingdom and obesity and Atheism and obesity

Question: We know that Britain has a problem with gluttony. Is God helping godless, British citizens overcome a problem with heavy drinking? See: Britain and alcoholism and Atheism and alcoholism

First, the pestilence of Covid-19 rained down on British pubs and now this! Oh, godless, British drunkards, feel the sting!

In 2020, YouGov.com reported: "Overall, four in ten (41%) Britons believe there is neither ‘a god’ nor ‘a higher power’. Younger generations are the most likely to think there is no greater force out there, including 50% of 25-39 year olds and 45% of 16-24 year olds, compared to 32% of those 60 and over."[13]

In 2014, The Telegraph reported: "The British are among the most sceptical in the world about religion, a global study has found. Just over a third of people in the UK believe religion has a positive role to play in our daily lives, compared to a global average of 59 per cent.[14]

The September 3, 2022 article This Winter, Collapse Is Coming to Britain states:

These days, my British friends ask me the same question, with the same faint tinge of terror in their voices. “So. How bad is it going to be?” What they mean is…well, let me try to explain why they’re asking.

Right about now, Britain’s setting records. Not good ones. It’s the rich world’s worst performing country in a stunning multitude of regards — falling incomes, crashing economy, skyrocketing inflation, dwindling confidence and optimism. Twice as many people died in Britain this summer of Covid than they did last summer. They were mostly elderly people, and that’s a parable for what modern Britain’s become: a stunningly cruel, indifferent, embittered society, inured to the grim reality of its own collapse.

Britain is the world’s preeminent bellwether of social collapse at this point in history. No nation in the rich world — and barely any in the poor one, really — come close. The rest of the world is dusting itself off after a rough few years, and restarting the engines of progress. But in Britain? Well, the engines of regress are pumping. Literally — sewage into the rivers. What kind of country wants to cover itself in its own — never mind...

Oh, but that’s just the beginning. What else is going to happen this winter? Total economic devastation. When I say “total,” I really mean it. This winter, Britain is poised for a self made catastrophe like the modern world has never seen. Lest you think I exaggerate, let me explain. Energy bills are expected to skyrocket — to prices that are beyond absurd. Pubs are in despair that their bills are going to from, say, a mere 10,000 pounds to 100,000. So imagine the nation that invented the pub…not having many left. Because do you know how many pubs can afford energy bills like that? You can probably count them on your fingers.[15]

Soaring energy prices and lack of carbon dioxide reportedly threaten beer production in the UK

The Britain born new atheists Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. The late Christopher Hitchens was known for his heavy drinking.[16]

The Russia Today website reported in September of 2022:

UK brewers are facing tenfold price increases for the CO2 they use to carbonate and package beers, the Financial Times reported on Friday, also citing supply disruptions that could threaten brewing ahead of the Christmas season.

According to the report, the market disruption follows a warning from US fertilizer group CF Industries last month that it would shut down a major UK ammonia plant that makes CO2 as a byproduct. The company said its decision was due to soaring natural gas prices, which have made production unviable.

“Brewers have been approached with little or no notice by their suppliers to accept huge surcharges for the continued supply of CO2, or issued with ‘force majeure’ letters to say ‘we can’t guarantee that your supply will continue,’” policy director at the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) Andy Tighe told the media outlet. “This risks an awful lot of production coming to a standstill just at the wrong time,” he warned.

The report also pointed out that gas suppliers have been struggling to source CO2 from international markets because of ammonia plant closures in Europe.[17]

UK/British pubs going out of business or closing early news. The smiting continues.

One of the reasons for the poor performance of the UK economy is workplace bullying. God smote many godless Brits with cowardly fear so they are now unassertive people who are easily bullied.

A new report by finance experts Company Debt suggests in 2022, the average bakery energy bill has tripled. For a small bakery that could mean an energy cost of £4,500, up from £1,500, the authors of the report have estimated."[18]

The United Kingdom is threatened with 10 years of economic misery due to its dire productivity, crumbling public services and a worsening labor supply.[21]

In 2020, the UK had 1.56 births per woman. A replacement level of births in a society is 2.1 children per woman. If only the godless British didn't have a subreplacement fertility rate. Then, they would not be facing a worsening labor supply. See: Atheism and fertility rates.

"The closing of thousands of British pubs is a small price to pay for Ukraine to have a negotiated settlement where Russia keeps some of their land gains during the war in Ukraine. And of course, Ukraine will continue to be an authoritarian and corrupt regime.[22] Besides, the British could use some slimming down and some cutting down on their heavy drinking. With the British, I have to give idealistic, rousing speeches to get their support. But with you Olena, I can talk realpolitik. Isn't that right, Olena? Those godless Brits should have never put Charles Darwin on their currency. Now they are paying the price. God is not mocked." - Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaking confidentially to his wife Olena.

International food authority Andrew Zimmern said of Britain's food: “Twenty years ago the food of the British Isles was universally considered to be among the world’s worst—boring, bland and boiled.”[25]

In the last 20 years, Britain has seen a large influx of immigrants many of whom eat spicier food. No doubt that is why Zimmern said "twenty years ago". But many of these immigrants are Muslims who do not run British pubs!

As U.K. Braces for Painful Budget Cuts, the Mood Is Quite Gloomy

As the godless U.K. braces for painful budget cuts, the mood is quite gloomy.

Question: When will Britain repent and see sunnier days?

On November 15, 2022, the New York Times published the article As U.K. Braces for Painful Budget Cuts, the Mood Is Gloomy which indicates:

Britain’s energy crisis hit Chris Watts quicker and harder than most business people: His company installs and fixes gas boilers. As soon as news of skyrocketing fuel bills surfaced last August, he said, customers began putting off repairs and replacements. Desperate to cut expenses, many have yet to switch on the heat in their houses.

“In the 28 years that we’ve been in business, we’ve never experienced the shock to the system that we’re seeing now,” said Mr. Watts, who was forced to move his family-owned firm to tighter quarters in a drab industrial park. Now, like tens of millions of Britons, he is also facing the prospect of a recession that the Bank of England warned could last for two years. “It’s one thing after another,” said Mr. Watts, 55, recalling his struggles to cope with the effects of Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic. “At some point, it’s got to stop.”

While Britain has lurched from crisis to crisis since it voted to leave the European Union in 2016, the latest wave of bad news is of a different order: double-digit inflation, a grinding downturn, rising interest rates and political upheaval. The next body blow will come on Thursday when the new government is expected to announce that it will raise taxes and slash spending to try to plug a gaping hole in the nation’s finances.

The cumulative effect has been to throw normally stoic Britons into a gripping anxiety, not just in perennially downtrodden industrial areas but also in healthier, workaday cities like Swindon. A Victorian-era railway town 72 miles west of London, Swindon has reinvented itself over the decades, first as a site for automakers and more recently as a distribution hub for giant retailers like Amazon. It has also become a political bellwether, with a history of voting for the governing party of the day.

Right now, the mood around town is dark.[28]

Effects of the Welsh Revival on drunkenness, criminality and other ill-behavior

See also: Irreligion and crime and Irreligious prison population

Evan John Roberts was a leading figure of the Welsh Revival of 1904-1905.

Larry Brown in his paper entitled The Welsh Revival And Other Revivals Worldwide, 1900-1905 declared concerning the Welsh Revival of 1904-1905:

The impact of the Welsh Revival touched essentially every aspect of Welsh society, with 100,000 throughout Wales professing faith. Demonstrating the permeating effects of this Revival, historian J. Edwin Orr, as recounted by Towns and Porter, noted:

“Drunkenness was immediately cut in half, and many taverns went bankrupt. Crime was so diminished that judges were presented with white gloves signifying that there were no cases of murder, assault, rape or robbery or the like to consider. The police became unemployed in many districts. Stoppages occurred in coal mines, not due to unpleasantness between management and workers, but because so many foul-mouthed miners became converted and stopped using foul language that the horses which handled the coal trucks in the mines could no longer understand what was being said to them” (Towns and Porter, 33).[30]

Jeff Fenske wrote of the Welsh Revival of 1904-1905:

As revival fire spread across Wales in late 1904 and early 1905, although no official records were kept of the actual number converted, 150,000 is considered a very conservative estimate, during the first six months! People’s lives were transformed by the thousands. This was indeed, a sovereign move of God’s Holy Spirit!

Whole communities were turned upside down, and were radically changed from depravity to glorious goodness. The crime rate dropped, often to nothing. The police force reported that they had little more to do than supervise the coming and going of the people to the chapel prayer meetings, while magistrates turned up at courts to discover no cases to try. The alcohol trade was decimated, as people were caught up more by what happened in the local chapels than the local public houses and bars. Families experienced amazing renewal, where the money earning husband and father, the bread winner, had wasted away the income and sowed discord, but now under the moving power of the Holy Spirit, following the conversion to be a follower of Jesus Christ, he not only provided correctly for family needs, but was now with the family, rather than wasting his time, and wages, in the public houses of the village or town...

Public houses were now almost empty. Men and women who used to waste their money getting drunk were saving it, giving it to help their churches, buying clothes and food for their families. And not only drunkenness, but stealing and other offences grew less and less, so that often a magistrate came to court, and found there were no cases for him.

Men whose language had been filthy before, learnt to talk purely. It is related that not only did the colliers put in a better day’s work, but also that the pit ponies were so used to being cursed and sworn at, that they just couldn’t understand orders being given in kind, clean words! Yet, still the work output increased. The dark tunnels underground in the mines echoed with the sounds of prayer and hymns, instead of oaths and nasty jokes and gossip.

People who had been careless about paying their bills, or paying back money they had borrowed, paid up all they owed. People who had fallen out became friends again.[31]

Global warming alarmism: How accurate are weather forecasts and climate forecasts?

In 2013, Scientific American published an article entitled Why Are Weather Forecasts Often Wrong?[32]

In 2020, data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggests a seven-day weather forecast by a meteorologist could accurately predict the weather about 80 percent of the time.[33][34] However, beyond 10 days, a weather forecast is only right about half the time.[35]

The accuracy of the long-range forecasts of climate scientists' that are 10 years or decades ahead of time are of dubious value (See: Limitations of science). In addition, environmentalists have a history of making alarmist statements that do not come to fruition (see: 50 years of failed doomsday, eco-pocalyptic predictions; the so-called ‘experts’ are 0-50, American Enterprise Institute).

Britain and alcoholism

A Eurobarometer poll in 2010 reported that 37% of UK citizens "believed there is a God", 33% believe there is "some sort of spirit or life force" and 25% answered "I don't believe there is any sort of spirit, God or life force".[36]

In addition, Britain is the birthplace of Darwinism. Since World War II a majority of the most prominent and vocal defenders of the evolutionary position which employs methodological naturalism have been atheists or agnostics.[38]

Britain and alcoholism

The Telegraph reported in 2013 in a news story titled Britain has a drinking problem, and it needs help:

The cost to the NHS of alcohol is £3.5 billion a year. Though we spend this fortune on the consequences of excessive drinking, we spend a relative pittance on the causes – £91 million on treatment, compared with £2 billion for treatment of problem drug-users. Yet there are estimated to be 1.6 million problem drinkers in England, over five times more than there are dangerous drug-users. I do not underestimate the dangers of drugs, but anyone who has sat in a courtroom knows that alcohol is the bigger problem, spilling into domestic violence, family breakdown and street disorder.[39]

UK and alcohol usage

On July 29, 2014, The Independent reported:

The UK is full of heavy drinkers with bad eating habits who are ignorant, intolerant and too nationalistic – so it’s just as well that we are also very polite.

It might sound like a stereotypical list of national traits, but these are the views of more than 5,000 young adults from five different countries who were asked to give their opinion on modern Britain by the British Council.[40]

The UK website Alcohol Concern reports:

More than 9 million people in England drink more than the recommended daily limits

In England, in 2012 there were 6,490 alcohol-related deaths, a 19% increase compared to 2001

Alcohol is 10% of the UK burden of disease and death, making alcohol one of the three biggest lifestyle risk factors for disease and death in the UK, after smoking and obesity.

An estimated 7.5 million people are unaware of the damage their drinking could be causing

In the UK in 2012-13, there were 1,008,850 hospital admissions related to alcohol consumption where an alcohol-related disease, injury or condition was the primary reason for hospital admission or a secondary diagnosis[41]

A side note about the UK and British

I have some British ancestry and have some admiration for some of the cultural achievements of the British. For example, I could point to Methodism, the book Pilgrim's Progress, the King James Bible, the works of C.S. Lewis, William Shakespeare's works, the Magna Carta, common law and the works of Charles Dickens.

And my dealings with the British have been very positive because as a whole as they are unfailing polite and have a sense of humor. Part of my work life involves dealing with British authors and/or filmmakers and the British still create some excellent works.

At the same time, post Charles Darwin Britain is less admirable in some ways than what came before it. And sometimes I needle British atheists, agnostics and evolutionists and/or people who are fans of such people, but I endeavor to do it in a good-natured way. For example, I wrote the essay: Does Richard Dawkins have machismo?.

John Wesley was the founder of Methodism.
