Explosive material

An explosive material, or explosive, is a substance which can produce an burst of heat and gas when heat, electricity or pressure is applied to it. Explosive material is highly combustible—lower explosives will deflagrate, but high explosives instantly detonate. This creates a shortwave of heat and gas, which gives the material its destructive power.
