James Madison

Federalist No. 14, authored by James Madison under the pen name Publius, is the fourteenth of 85 essays. Titled "Objections to the Proposed Constitution From Extent of Territory Answered", Madison writes about some of the same that he did in Federalist No. 10. However, one of the main topics of Federalist 14 are the differences between the two forms of government: democracy and republic.

Madison is writing in response to a paper written by anti-federalist author George Clinton, who argues in his Extent of Territory under Consolidated Government Too Large to Preserve Liberty or Protect Property that one solitary nation would fail due to the extent of land. Clinton points to the observations of Montesquieu about this historical weakness of the republican form.

It was published on November 30, 1787.
