A fifth column is a group of people or sympathizers who rationally and clandestinely try to undermine a larger group to which it is expected to be loyal. Members may engage in espionage or sabotage within defense lines or within national borders. Per the Encyclopedia Britannica, "A cardinal technique of the fifth column is the infiltration of sympathizers into the entire fabric of the nation under attack and particularly into positions of policy decision and national defense."[1]

Historic examples

The expression dates from the Spanish Civil War in 1936 when the Francoist General Mola, whose forces were threatening Madrid, boasted that he had four columns approaching the city and a fifth column within it.

During the Second World War, when British citizens were anxious about supposed fifth-columnists in the UK, the artist William Heath-Robinson produced a series of cartoons about the Sixth Column, patriotic men and women devoted to frustrating the actions of the Fifth Column.[2] There was also a reference to existence of a Nazi or Hitler Fifth Column being in existence during WWII.[3][4]

Assata Shakur, also known as Joanne Chesimard, is the woman that shot and killed New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster in 1973 and then fled to communist Cuba for sanctuary.[17][18]

In May 2020, following the death of George Floyd, the BLM was exposed to be devolving into a group promoting the destruction of the United States and the cherished values of the Founding Fathers after allegedly being infiltrated by the radical elements of Antifa. The BLM began promoting a campaign to #DefundThePolice, claiming they "demand acknowledgment and accountability for the devaluation and dehumanization of Black life at the hands of the police".[19]

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a member of Antifa, brought second degree murder charges against the arresting officers when medical examiner determined George Floyd's death was not related to his arrest. Antifa then provoked nationwide riots beginning in Minneapolis. In Minneapolis, violent anarcho-Marxists caused in excess of $55 million in damages, destruction of 200 buildings and more than 500 businesses that serve primarily minority communities. Nationwide scores of citizens were murdered, including police. Minneapolis then moved to bow to the Marxist initiatives and abolished its police protections.

In June 2020, it was revealed that BLM was "Laundering MILLIONS" of dollars to Joe Biden's 2020 Presidential Campaign by redirecting donors who choose to contribute to Black lives Matter via their website to a hyperlinked webpage (ActBlue Charities platform) with BLM’s branding, to essentially deceive people into donating to Democrat campaigns.[20] Under the guise of peaceful protesting, the BLM continued in the ongoing targeting of historic monuments within the United States[21] by vandalizing and/or destroying them. Historic members of Americas past, that were previously immortalized in statue form and located in public spaces, were targeted during nightly gatherings of radicalized anarchists. Often the letters "BLM" were spray painted on a statue's pedestal base or a statue would be decapitated or a statue would be toppled and removed from the pedestal, vandalized and then dragged away, all to the cheering and encouragement of those present.[22] An American staple, Popular Mechanics, actually published an article entitled 'How to Topple a Statue Using Science' to explain how to "Bring that sucker down without anyone getting hurt" and encouraged more vandalism.[23] Previously elected Democratic Party mayors of cities that condoned, expressed support for or turned a blind eye to the marxist BLM agenda began approving the painting of so-called "murals" on public roadways, allegedly meant to antagonize President Donald Trump, the Police and others that did not support the stated BLM position. In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio purposefully and intentionally targeted the Trump Tower, that is located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, NY, with a gaudy mural proclaiming "BLACK LIVES MATTER" to send a "loud and clear" message.[24]

Black Muslims

Many political analysts have expressed grave concerns over Black Muslims serving as a Fifth Column within the United States and within the U.S. military. Allegedly, there is a radical contingent of Islamists operating in the U.S. who are willing to provide aid and comfort to enemies of the U.S. One Black Muslim leader, Louis Farrakhan, has publicly expressed their hatred of America.

In March 2003, Sgt. Asan Akbar was alleged to have tossed several grenades into the tents of senior officers at the 101st Airborne's Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait City. Two officers were killed and 15 were wounded. Akbar is a Black Muslim, who became a Muslim as an adult, and was later convicted of the crimes.[25] In an article entitled "'Fifth Column' within the U.S. armed forces," an analyst wrote: "The murderous insider attack in the 101st could be the precursor for a far larger and more dangerous problem, both for the military and for American society more generally."[26]
