Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 – 1446) was an Italian architect and sculptor. Brunelleschi also designed the duomo (dome) for the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, a breakthrough in engineering and architecture that showed Brunelleschi's deep understanding of mathematics.
Brunelleschi was the first architect to employ mathematical perspective to redefine Gothic and Romanesque space and to establish new rules of proportioning and symmetry. [1]
