The firearms debate in the United States is sharply divided between two poles:
- Gun control advocates
- The people advocating greater gun rights.
Conservatives favor laws that promote private ownership and possession of guns, arguing that guns help people to defend themselves against criminals (who will never follow gun laws anyway) and that concealed carry has helped to decrease crime since before the 1990's when concealed carry was illegal in most states.
- "the only use for a gun is to kill people"
- "guns don't kill people; people do"
