IMDb profile |
For Your Eyes Only (1981) is the twelfth film of the James Bond film series and the fifth to star Roger Moore as fictional British secret agent James Bond. It is a loose adaptation of Ian Fleming's eighth James Bond novel and incorporates elements from several of the novel's short stories. The film was directed by John Glen, who would later return to direct all of the five Bond films released in the 1980s, breaking the record for the most films for a Bond director. For Your Eyes Only is also notable for being the first and only Bond film in which the character of M does not appear. This was due to the death of actor Bernard Lee, who played Sir Miles Messervy/M in the previous eleven Bond films. Out of respect for Lee, M was not re-cast in the film. For Your Eyes Only also marks the final official appearance of the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who is subdued by Bond in the film's pre-title sequence (although he was neither directly named in the film nor had a direct physical appearance due to the events of a then-ongoing legal dispute between EON films and Kevin McClory over the rights for Thunderball.). This was originally going to be Roger Moore's final James Bond film, but he was contracted to reprise the role in Octopussy and A View to a Kill, due to the release of the rival Bond film Never Say Never Again starring Sean Connery in 1983.
