Gomez was born in Los Angeles, the son of Columbia immigrants. He was a Navy pilot and Navy SEALS platoon commander. He left the Navy in 1996 and received a MBA from Harvard Business School.

Gomez is a RINO. Gomez claimed to be pro-life, however, he is a PLINO as he supports Roe v. Wade. He supports amnesty, same-sex "marriage", and gun control.
