'''Gene Roddenberry''', (1921 - 1991) was an American screenwriter and producer and is best known as the creator of the ''[[Star Trek]]'' franchise. During [[World War II]] Roddenberry served in the U.S. Army Air Forces and was a recipient of the [[Distinguished Flying Cross]] for his actions flying over [[Guadalcanal]].  

He was the chief writer for several TV series before launching ''Star Trek'' in 1966.
