George Hussein Onyango Obama (born 1982) is the youngest of Barack Obama's half-brothers. Born to Barack Obama, Sr. and his partner, mother Jael. Jael resides in the United States. They have five other half brothers (Roy (now known as Abong'o), Bernard, Abo, Mark and David) and a half sister (Auma). George never knew his father Barack Hussein Obama Sr., who died in a 1982 car accident six months after he was born.
"No-one knows who I am," he told the magazine (Italy's Vanity Fair), before claiming: "I live here (Huruma on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya) on less than a dollar a month." In a Times of the UK article, George says "They say I live on a dollar a month, but this is all lies by people who don’t want my brother to win.” The article purposely fails to disclose his yearly wage.
During his 1987 visit to Kenya, Barack Obama met with him:
"I took comfort in the fact that perhaps one day, when he was older, George, too, might want to know who his father had been, and who his brothers and sisters were, and that if he ever came to me I would be there for him, to tell him the story I knew," Obama wrote in Dreams From My Father.
In September 2008, National Review featured an article by Dinesh D'Souza which declared:
|“||George Obama’s shack measures six feet by ten feet, and yet he says that Barack Obama has done nothing to reach out to him or to help him. “I live like a recluse. If anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed.”||”|
A critic of Barack Obama's uncharitableness towards his brother George Obama wrote:
|“||Well, they say charity begins at home, but it hasn't apparently in this case. Hearing about what George is going through, you can't help but wonder why his brother Barack won't send the guy $20? I mean it would double his annual income.||”|
George later refuted these claims in an issue of The Times claiming they are unsubstantiated rumors made up by people who did not want his brother to win. Indeed, he said, in a demonstration of integrity that he "expects no charity from his brother"
Asked by Harry Smith from CBS about Obama leaving the campaign to visit his ailing grandmother, Obama replied, "Yeah, well, the -- I think most people understand that if you're not caring for your family, then you're probably not the kind of person who's going to be caring for other people." No mention of his younger brother George.
