A
First the numbers:
- .223 - According to gun author Gabriel Suarez in his book The Tactical Rifle (1999, page 40), "The .223 round is a a marginal performer against humans. Although it offers certain advantages over handgun rounds or shotgun rounds, you must be careful not to expect too much." According to Boston T. Party, "the large wound cavity of the 55 gr 223 round is produced by bullet fragmentation (usually at the cannelure), which occurs only if bullet impact velocity is at least 2800fps. Such velocities may be expected only within 150 yards for 20 inch barrels and within 75 yards for 16" carbine barrels. At father ranges, no bullet fragmentation will occur and the round's lethality (marginal at best) is significantly reduced."[1]
- .357 Magnum - "The first magnum handgun cartridge is still the best. The .357 Magnum almost single-handedly put handgun hunting on the map. A fine hunting cartridge, the .357 Magnum is also the top "one shot stop" defensive cartridge and the most powerful handgun cartridge that most shooters have a reasonable chance of mastering."[2]
- 15+1, etc. Gun's total capacity: magazine capacity plus round in the chamber.
- .50 BMG - .50 Browning Machine Gun. A cartridge used in single-shot or semi-automatic target rifles. Very popular with civilians in long-distance (1000-1500 yard) shooting matches. The .50 BMG throws a 700 gr at 2800 for 12,189fpe.
- 7.62x54R - see Mosin-Nagant
Now the letters:
- accident - A self-serving euphemism for negligent discharge of a firearm. Guns do not "go off" by themselves anymore than cars start themselves up and drive down the road. They must be loaded, chambered, the trigger cocked, and fired by a human.
- accuracy - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, accuracy is "the ability of a firearm to place all shots close to the same place. See group."[3]
- ACP - Automatic Colt Pistol. See also .45 ACP and .380 ACP
- action - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, an action is "the mechanism of a firearm. The action allows a gun to be loaded, locked, fired, and unloaded."[4]
- Alliant - smokeless powder manufacturer.
- AP - Armor piercing - Designated with a painted black tip
- API-T - Armor piercing incendiary tracer - The spotting round for API
- arsenal - Where guns are manufactured. There is much erroneous transposition the word arsenal and armory, which is furthered by gun manufacturers calling themselves an "armory" (e.g. Springfield Armory)
- "assault rifles" - Historically, select-fire carbines (e.g. StG44, AK47, M16, etc.) of an intermediate rifle caliber (e.g. 8x33, 7.62x39, .223, etc. with a 15-30 round detachable magazine.
- "assault weapons" - In liberal gun grabber PolSpeak, assault weapons are semi-automatic rifles that scare Congress. ("If it looks bad, then it must be bad!" - referring to "black rifles" with "scary features" such as a pistol grip, a flash hider, a bayonet lug, a forward pistol grip.
B
- ballistic coefficient (BC) - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, ballistic coefficient is "the ratio of a bullet's sectional density to its coefficient of form. BC represents how efficiently the bullet flies through the air; the higher the BC number the more aerodynamic the bullet."[5]
- battle carbine - A semi-auto military-pattern carbine of lesser cartridge, such as the .223 or 7.62x39. Civilian versions are mistakenly called "assault rifles" when such are not select-fire weapons
- Battle carbine optics - include for example the ACOG. According to Boston, "Optics must be rugged, lightweight, and offer very fast target acquisition for CQB. A circle, dot, or triangle point of aim is the norm, and it should be illuminated at all times day or night (e.g., ACOG "BAC" system with tritium). Distance stadia lines are nice (e.g., ACOG), but not absolutely necessary (e.g., the AUG's 5MOA 'doughnut of death"). As in battle rifles, the scope mount should also be see-through if possible."[6]
- battle rifle - "A semi-auto military-pattern rifle of substantial cartridge, such as the .308. Examples are the M14, FAL, HK91, and AR-10. A battle rifle should be able to deliver "1000fpe at 500 yards within 20" (4MOA). 500 yards with iron sights is about max for most shooters (even very good ones). Superior power and accuracy belongs to scoped bolt guns in magnum cartridges. An MBR should be effective out to ranges where the sniper rifle begins. 200-300yd carbines in .223 have their place (support, CQB, perimeter, etc.), but riflemen need rifles.""[7]
- Battle rifle optics - include for example Burris 3-9x Fullfield II. According to Boston T Party, "Optics must be very rugged and versatile. Rugged because a .308 MBR has hefty recoil and sees hard use. Versatile because the battle rifle will be employed for everything from CQB to precision work. Hence, it must have a quickly acquired point of aim, as well as range finding stadia lines and a BDC. The scope mount should be see-through in order to have immediate use of the iron sights. While I have a lot of experience with the I.O.R. M2 4x units, the Burris Fullfield II ballistic-Plex scopes have now gained my favor as very affordable and rugged optics for battle rifles."[8]
- BC - See ballistic coefficient
- BDC - See bullet drop compensator
- boattail - Bullets with tapered bases, designed for long-range shooting.
- bore diameter - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, bore diameter is "the land to land diameter of the inside of a gun barrel, usually expressed in decimal fractions of an inch (.300). Traditionally cartridges have been named for the bore diameter of the guns that fire them (.270 Winchester)."[9]
- brace - A pair (of handguns).
- brass - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, brass is "the cartridge case. This is usually made out of brass, hence the name. The case holds the powder inside, a primer in its bottom, and a bullet in its mouth. Assembled, these components constitute a cartridge."[10]
- bullet - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, a bullet is "the projectile that is propelled downrange when a gun is fired. Bullet cores are usually made of lead that is often jacketed or semi-jacketed in copper or a copper alloy. Or not jacketed at all (a.k.a. cast or swaged lead bullets)."[11]
- bullet diameter - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, bullet diameter is "the actual diameter of a bullet, usually measured in decimal fractions of an inch (.308"). In Europe bullet diameters are typically expressed in millimeters (7.62mm). In recent years many cartridges have been named for their bullet diameter (.308 Winchester)."[12]
- bullet drop compensator - also called BDC
C
- caliber - The diameter of a bullet in fractional inch, as in .357 caliber, .44 caliber. Not "cartridge".
- cannelure - A groove around a bullet to hold a case crimp.
- CCL - See concealer carry license
- CCP - See concealed carry permit
- CCW - See concealed carry weapon
- C-Mag - A 100 round drum magazine in the case of an AR-15 chambered in .223. This what can accurately be called a high capacity magazine.
- cartridge - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, a cartridge is "the combination of the bullet, case, powder, and primer in a ready to fire configuration (the way you would buy them in a box from a gun store)."[13]
- case - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, a case is "really a vessel that holds the powder inside, a primer in its bottom, and a bullet in its mouth. It is usually made of brass. Assembled, these components constitute a cartridge."[14]
- certiorari - A Supreme Court hearing of a case. To "deny cert" means to refuse to hear the case and let the lower court's ruling stand.
- cheek weld - The consistent placement of cheek to buttstock. Precise and consistent cheek weld is crucial to long-range shooting accuracy.
- clip
- clip (firearms) - Not a magazine, but a stripper clip or revolver moon clip.
- COL - See cartridge overall length
- cold-carry - A kind of method or gun designed for quick disposal.
- Colt - Colt's Manufacturing Company (CMC) is an American gun maker founded by founded Samuel Colt in 1855. Colt is based in West Hartford, Connecticut. Colt best-known firearms are the Colt M4 Carbine, the Colt M1911 pistol, the Colt Python double action revolver, the Single Action Army or Peacemaker single action revolver, and the Colt Walker.
- Colt employed the famous gun designer John Moses Browning for a period where he designed a semi-automatic pistol called the Colt M1900. This pistol was improved by Browning and eventually released as world's most popular handgun (along with the Glock), the Colt M1911. Although Colt didn't invent the AR-15/M16, for many years Colt was the main contractor for all manufacturing of the AR-15 and M16.
- *Samuel Colt (President of Colt from 1855-1862)
- Long guns: e.g. AR-15 type rifles, like the M16 rifle, M4 carbine and Colt Commando (see AR-15 variants);
- Semi-automatic pistols: Colt M1911 (Model O, 1911), Colt Delta Elite a modified Colt M1911A1 chambered for the 10mm Auto, Colt Commander

- "compound" - According to Boston T. Party, "compound" is the liberal hoplophobe gun grabber PolSpeak mainstream media word for the wooden home of an American dissident under federal siege." See Ruby Ridge and Waco.
- concealment - Something which hides you from view (e.g. brush, curtain), but offers little to no protection from incoming bullet fire (as does cover). Concealment is not cover!
- concealed carry
- concealed carry weapon - CCW
- concealer carry license - CCL
- concealed carry permit - CCP
- Conditions 1-4 - Descriptions of a gun's loaded status. Especially popular term among M1911 owners. See also cocked and locked
- cook-off - A chambered round that fired in a hot barrel, without the trigger having been pulled. This is only a problem in closed-bolt full-autos.
- "cop killer bullet" - According to Boston T. Party, "cop killer bullets" is the liberal hoplophobe gun grabber PolSpeak word for "the KTW Teflon-coated handgun bullet, never sold to civilians, which was the origin of that wholly artificial scare. (Never mind that there has not been one case of a cop's bulletproof vest perforated by criminal handgun fire.) Because of this crap, and Olympic Arms making a 7.62x39 AR-15 pistol, the Chinese steel-core ammo was outlawed during the Clinton Administration."
- corrosive - A primer containing corrosive compounds, which are harmful to the bore and gas system unless quickly removed with hot, soapy water. Such primers are extremely stable in storage and in cold weather, which is why many Third World countries still use them today.
- cover - Anything that protects from gunfire, such as a brick wall, a Skousen wall, car engine block, sand bags, etc. Cover is also usually concealment, except for bulletproof glass.
- CQB - Close quarters battle. A gunfight within 25 yards. Such CQB fights are best won with a battle carbine such as an M4 Carbine in 5.56/.223 or a short barrel rifle, with a 12 gauge short barrel shotgun such as a sawed off shotgun, or at minimum with a long sight radius full size handgun such as a Glock 21 in .45 ACP. See short-range shooting versus long-range shooting (sniping by a sniper with a sniper rifle.

F
- FAL
- FFL - Federal Firearms Licensee
- FMJ - full metal jacket

- fps - feet per second
- Federal Reserve Notes - see 0. According to Boston T. Party, "'Federal Reserve Notes' (FRN) which are no longer redeemable, in and masquerade as, real $ dollars (gold/silver money). Ancient Chinese proverb: 'The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right name.' The inverse of that is to stop calling things by their wrong name, which is why I refuse to call FRNs 'dollars.'"
- firearm
- firing pin - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, a firing pin is "a small metal rod inside of a firearm that strikes the primer of a cartridge when the trigger is pulled and it is hit by the hammer. This causes the primer to ignite the powder inside the cartridge and propel the bullet out of the firearm. A long, heavy firing pin that is propelled by a stiff firing pin spring rather than being hit by a hammer is usually called a "striker.""[15]
G
- Ga - gauge
- gauge - ga
- GCA68 - Gun Control Act of 1968
- Glock - G19 Glock 19
- GOA - Gun Owners of America
- grains - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, grain refers to "a unit of measure in which 7000 grains equal one pound and 437.5 grains equal one ounce. Used in the measure of bullet weight and the weight of powder charges, among other things."[16]
- groove diameter - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, groove diameter is "the groove to groove diameter of the inside of a gun barrel. This is usually the same as the diameter of the bullets that it is intended to fire."[17]
- "gun control" - Another liberal lie politically correct propaganda term more accurately called "coercive victim disarmament"
- "gun free zone" - Another liberal lie politically correct propaganda more accurately called "free kill zones".

- handgun hunting - see Smith and Wesson Model 629, Smith and Wesson Model 29, .44 Magnum, .500 Smith and Wesson
- "hate crime" - According to Boston T. Party in his Boston's Gun Bible, hate crime is the liberal lie politically correct propaganda term (PolSpeak) for "any crime committed by a white against a non-white."
- HCI - Handgun Control, Inc. - According to Boston T. Party in his Boston's Gun Bible, "Handgun Control Inc is headed by that gross opportunist Sarah Brady who has worn out several wheelchairs from trotting out her husband James Brady (who took in the head one of Hinckey's bullets)."
- high capacity magazine - For a rifle this means a 40 round or larger capacity magazine (firearms), such as a 40-round AK-47 mag versus a standard capacity magazine or normal capacity magazine of only 30 rounds. More accurately, a "hi cap mag" would be a 100-round C-Mag in the case of an AR-15 chambered in .223. Lying and/or ignorant liberal gun grabbers like to refer to standard capacity magazines (a 20 to 30 round mag) with the politically correct term "high capacity magazines". They call anything bigger than 10 rounds as "high capacity". Now in the unfree state of New York, thanks to leftist Governor Andrew Cuomo's New York SAFE law all guns with greater than 7 rounds are a felony and are required asset forfeiture—that rules out 99% of all semi-automatic rifles and most semi-automatic pistols with the exception of mouse guns / pocket pistols, revolvers, and M1911s. In New York state, forget about legally owning a Glock (except for the .380 ACP Glock 42 since the majority of all Glocks hold more than 13 rounds in a standard capacity magazine.

- scope - See also liberal PolSpeak "sniper rifle"
- scope (firearms) - Scope, among gun enthusiasts, hunters and snipers, refers to an optical device that assists in shooting accuracy. The purpose of sights is to hit your target. If your vision has deteriorated enough that you cannot effectively use iron sights at long range, or if you expect lots of low-light combat, then a quality optical sight is a necessary attachment for a battle rifle.
- Second Amendment - a portion of the Bill of Rights that addresses the right to bear arms.
- sectional density (SD) - According to gun writer Matthew Boyd, sectional density is "the diameter to weight ratio of a bullet. Calculated by dividing the bullet's weight in pounds by its diameter in inches. Sectional density is important because, all other factors being equal, the higher the SD the better the penetration of the bullet."[20]

There are several manufacturers of smokeless powder and numerous individual types of smokeless powder. Among the best known brands in North America are Alliant, Hodgdon, IMR, Norma, and Winchester/Olin."[21]
- "sniper rifle" - According to Boston T. Party's Boston's Gun Bible it refers to a liberal lie politically correct propaganda term (PolSpeak) . "As soon as you add a scope to a hunting rifle, liberals call it a "sniper rifle". This is politically correct PolSpeak for any rifle with a scope. The anti-gun pols are finally realizing the awesome capability of scoped, high-powered rifles, which make the AK-47 look puny by comparison. As I predicted in 1998, this pejorative term is becoming a gunphobe buzzphrase (like "cult," "compound," "patriot," "militia," "Saturday night specials," "assault weapons" and "cop killer bullets")."[22]
- standard capacity magazine - or normal capacity magazine a 20 to 30 round magazine (firearms). Lying and/or ignorant Liberal gun grabbers like to refer to these with the politically correct term "high capacity magazines.
- "stockpile" - The liberal lie politically correct propaganda term (PolSpeak) for legally purchasing and storing any quantity of politically incorrect items such as weapons, firearms, ammunition, magazines, body armor, night vision equipment, knives, etc.. See Essay:Invest in tangibles.
T
- Tactical rifle optics - include for example the Shepherd 310-P2. According to Boston, "If you needed to make a 250 yard head shot or 600yd body shot, this is the rifle you'd want. (Also called a "precision rifle" or "countersniper" rifle.) Hence, it will have something like a 3-9x magnification scope with at least 1/2MOA adjustments (if not 1/4MOA). The reticle will likely be Mil Dot, and the scope will have a BDC. Some battle rifle optics make for very competent tactical applications, such as the Burris Ballistic-Plex units. Because of the higher accuracy requirement, these rifles are often, if not usually, bolt actions. But, not always. An M14 can make a fine tactical rifle if tuned to <1 1/4M0A accuracy."[23]
