The popular Robertson's Jam Golly

The character Golliwog is the main character in verses written by Bertha Upton in the 1890s. The books were illustrated by her daughter Florence. Mother and daughter worked together on a total of twelve books recounting cheerful character's adventures travelling around the world. Golliwog was always accompanied by his friends, the Dutch Dolls.

Golliwog, (or Golly as he became) eventually became the mascot for Robertson's Jam who created dolls and enamelled badges to be given away for a promotion whereby people would send in a number of jam jar labels.

In recent times, Golly is not seen as politically correct and has waned in popularity.
