Government cheese is processed cheese that was provided to welfare recipients in the United States from the 1960s to the 1990s, though the cheese predates this era being used in kitchens in World War II. The cheese was made from ingredients that the government had in surplus.

In contemporary usage, it is a derogatory term used in the U.S. to refer to welfare and other government assistance.
