The Great Northern War was a conflict in the early 1700s between the "Northern Alliance"—Russia, Denmark, Norway, Lithuania, Poland and Saxony—and Sweden for supremacy in the Baltic Sea. Russia's ascension to becoming a respected and feared European power and Sweden's defeat, in which it lost the majority of its colonies and its respect as a European power, are results that came from it.
The death toll of the Sweden was about 25,000 in combat and 175,000 in other ways; among the Northern Alliance 120,000 were combat casualties and many more perished from such as famine.
