The Greek Civil War took place between 1944 and 1949 after the Communist-led resistance movement ELAS (which had since 1942 been fighting anti-Communist Greek partisans as well as the occupying German forces) attacked forces loyal to the Greek Government-in-Exile, which had returned to Athens after the German withdrawal. Te communist rising was defeated with the aid of British troops.
