Gregory Bestor "Greg" Craig (born March 4, 1945) is a prominent Washington lawyer who served as the White House Counsel under President Barack Obama from January through November 2009. Additionally, he served as Assistant to the President and Special Counsel during the Clinton administration, where he represented President Clinton during his Senate impeachment trial. As an attorney Craig's most controversial client was John Hinckley, Jr., who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan, and helped put together an insanity defense that led to Hinckley's acquittal. [1]

Craig was forced to resign from the Obama administration after frustration among senior White House aides over his handling of the closing of Guantanamo Bay. [2] In January Obama had signed an executive order to close the prison by the end of January 2010.
