Half-Breeds were the more liberal wing of the Republican Party from 1877-1884 that pushed for a civil service system. Conservstives called them Half-Breeds because since they were moderate, they were only "half Republican" in their view, much like a RINO. They were led by corrupt Senator James G. Blaine of Maine. They succeeded the moderate Republicans who had been less opposed to slavery than the Radical Republicans. Their main achievement was the passage of the Pendleton Act, which helped to expand the powers of the Deep State.[1]
