Creating (or modifying) templates

Conservapedia requires that all templates be properly documented. See Creating templates for details. Failure to document templates will result in the templates being deleted or reverted.

Feel free to improve this page

I've just spent several hours creating this page, but haven't worried much about the following.

  • Formatting.
  • Order of sections.
  • Whether I've categorised the templates correctly.
  • The descriptions. They are very brief and may not always be accurate.
  • Categories. Perhaps all templates that include categories should have their categories listed.
  • Anything about substituting (subst:).
  • Whether the templates are appropriate and within our rules and guidelines.

Please feel free to improve this page.

Personal Remarks

Here are the documented templates:

  1. {{Delete personal remark}} Put this template around an inappropriate personal remark to make it "vanish". Includes the page in the category "Personal Remarks".
  2. {{Hide personal remark}} Put this template around an inappropriate personal remark to make it vanish. This template does not include the page in the category "Personal Remarks".
  3. {{Remove personal remark}} Notice that a personal mark has been removed. Adds the page to the category Personal remarks.
  4. {{Show personal remark}} Reinstate personal remark hidden by Personal remark removed, and includes page in category Personal Remarks.
  5. {{Strike personal remark}} Put this template around an inappropriate personal remark to strike it out.

I'd like to reorganize these, so they all have consistent names. Let's make them all start the same way, like "Personal remark". Then we can add options like "hidden", "removed", "ellipsis", "strike out".

I'm not sure if it's valuable to tag them with categories. I'll leave that up to others.

One nice thing about starting the template names the same way, is that you can change how the personal remark appears by changing the last word of the template name. Instead of strikeout, maybe you want tiny font or just an ellipsis.

  • personal remark removed - a notice is shown, maybe in small font size
  • personal remark hidden - nothing shows at all
  • personal remark strikeout - a line through the remark, like this
  • personal remark ellipsis - just three dots ...

What do you think of this naming scheme, Philip? --Ed Poor Talk 09:39, 25 February 2008 (EST)

How about the following:
  • {{Personal remark|removed|remark}}
  • {{Personal remark|hidden|remark}}
  • {{Personal remark|struck out|remark}}
  • {{Personal remark|ellipsis|remark}}
That is, just one template to cover all four cases.
That's as far as naming goes. What I don't understand is what cases each different one is used for.
