In Greek mythology, Hermes is the messenger god, in addition to being the god of merchants and thieves. He is the son of Zeus and Maia, and, like his father, is one of the Olympians. He invented the lyre, and was frequently called upon to help release captives. He freed Io from the monster Argus, Odysseus from Calypso and Circe, and Ares from Otus and Ephialtes.[1]
