1. Explain why the North supported higher tariffs, but the South opposed them. The Southerners disliked tariffs for two reasons: First, because tariffs on European countries would cause them to retaliate by placing tariffs on southern goods, hurting revenue from abroad. Since the South was the main production center, this impacted the South more than the North. Secondly, it caused the southern farmer to need to pay for imported equipment, and since the South was the agricultural center of the United States, the tariffs on equipment needed for farming would impact the South most. 2. Do you think States have the right to secede from (leave) the United States? Discuss, including a mention of "nullification doctrine."

3. Who was the most politically conservative of the early presidents, after George Washington? Explain.

The most conservative president after Washington was James Monroe. He was so conservative that he opposed the ratification of the Constitution. Yet he was also extremely popular.,just like Washington. He ran for reelection, and was elected, with were no other candidates running against him.

4. Many say the War of 1812 was an unnecessary war. Your view, please? I think the War of 1812 was unnecessary, and brought about by the bumbling way in which James Monroe handled international relations. Had he not chosen to invade Canada during the altercations between the French and the British, he would not have incurred the wrath of the British. 5. Choose any mystery or discussion question from the lecture, and write about it.

6. Pick the decision you like most, and the one you like least, by the Marshall Court. Explain. The decision I like the most is the one rendered in Marbury Vs. Madison, which gave the Judiciary branch the ability to check the legislative branch by deeming an action unconstitutional, However I disliked the decision rendered in Cherokee Nation v. Georgia since it justified Georgia’s mistreating the native Americans, and caused the Cherokee nation not to be able to have a voice in whether they were mistreated.

7. Identify the figures in the cartoon, provide an approximate date, and describe the likely viewpoint of the cartoonist:

The text in the cartoon from left to right (clockwise direction) is: John Bull: Pray Mr Bruin try if you can make up this little Difference between us-The Wasps and Hornets have Stung me so hard I wish I had never disturbed their Nests. Columbia: I thank you Mr Bruin but I cannot trust the Bull. 'Tho he has promised to draw his HORNS he must be safe bound to the Stake before I treat with him. Bruin: Let me unite your hands Madam-Johny and I have been very friendly since I sent him my Fleet to take care of---- The characters from left to right would be, The United States, Russia, and England, this comic refers to the Treaty of Ghent , the treaty which ended the war of 1812. This treaty was between England and the United States and was mediated by Russia, commonly represented as the bear.

A likely date would be 1814, when the Treaty of Ghent was formed The viewpoint of the author would probably be one which sympathizes with the U.S. , as represented by John Bull. The fact that the John Bull is adopting more of a whining attitude makes him seem weaker, and the British and Russians seem more responsible and more powerful, making me think the author was pro England. 8. Describe something that surprises you about the map of the United States in 1840……… Honors Questions… Answer three out of the following questions (in addition to the questions above): ………. H1. I think we overpaid in buying the Louisiana Purchase, and that it was unconstitutional also. Do you agree?

H2. Pick your favorite political party from the lecture, and explain why.

My favorite political party is Monroe's Democratic-Republican Party, because the treaties established under it were so important, and included the Monroe doctrine, the Missouri compromise, and the Adamis-Onis treaty. H3. Discuss any debate topic or mystery related to 1800-1840. What happened to Aaron Burr? After Aaron Burr shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in the duel in 1804, he moved out west to some land he had leased from Spain, where he conspired against the United States government. However the general he was conspiring with, James Wilkinson, turned him in to Jefferson, who apprehended and tried him in 1807. The court found him not guilty, He lived abroad from 1808 to 1812, and even befriended Utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, He remarried in 1833, suffered a stroke in 1834, and died in 1836, He was buried alongside his father in Princeton New Jersey.

H4. It is said that Andrew Jackson was the first modern president. Why, and would you have voted for him? Andrew Jackson was the first modern president because he established the president’s role as the leader of the government, not just another equal piece of the government. I would not have voted for Andrew Jackson for two reasons, First, he acted out of emotion, not out of reason; he slaughtered Indians and British and disliked bankers based on minor experiences he had in his youth. Secondly, he acted in an unchristian manner-- he disproportionally inflicted mass suffering upon the native Americans. An example of this would be the Trail of Tears, when Indians were forcibly and sometimes violently removed from states in the east.

H5. Some issues are so divisive -- and so wrong -- that they cause infringement of other constitutional rights. Give a few examples from history, and today
