IEEE 1394 is a high speed serial interface most commonly used for video transfer from a digital camcorder to a computer for editing purposes. The 1995 standard allows transfer rates of 100, 200 or 400 MB/s half-duplex. The standard has changed as this interface has become more common and data rates have increased. IEEE 1394b allows 800MB/s transfer rates.
This interface is known as FIREWIRE by Apple(tm) and ILINK by Sony(tm).
IEEE 1394 is actually the name of the interface standard by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
The connector has two types, 4-wire and 6-wire. The 6-wire connector supplies power to the device.
