The Igbo are an ethnic group from eastern Nigeria. They live in small and traditionally autonomous communities unified by a common culture. It is estimated that the present-day population is of the order of 13 million people. Famous for having produced the earliest bronze-age art in the region, they dominated agricultural trade in Nigeria. An ill-fated attempt to establish the short-lived state of Biafra between 1960 and 1970 lead to a civil war and the genocide of those Igbo living in other parts of the country.
