"In God We Trust" is the official motto of the US. It is found on all American currency, a few state flags, several stamps, and monuments in state capitals. Also the official motto for the state of Florida. The origin of this phrase may be Psalm 56:4 - "In God I have put my trust."[1]
The phrase first appeared on an American coin in 1864. It became law in 1956 after an Act of Congress and President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law. Thereafter it appeared on all US coinage.[2]
For nearly 150 years many United States dollar coins included this motto on one flat side of the coin,[3] but in 2007 the new George Washington dollar coin includes this motto only in small print on the edge of the coin.
