An Independence Day is, as the name suggests, a day which celebrates the independence of a nation or other body of people. It typically marks the day when the independence was won, or when it was first declared. For example, the United States Independence Day is on July 4th, the day independence was declared from Britain. A revolutionary war ensued, involving years of hostilities before the declaration was accepted by the British. However, New Zealand has an independence day known as Waitangi Day. In this case, it marks the day hostilities ended and a treaty was formed recognizing their independence.
