James T. Genovese, known as Jimmy Genovese (born August 24, 1949),[1] is one of the seven justices of the Louisiana Supreme Court, which convenes in New Orleans, Louisiana. Genovese studied at the Academy of the Immaculate Conception in Opelousas and in 1971 graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. In 1974, he received his Juris Doctorate from the Loyola University College of Law in New Orleans. On November 2, 2004, he was elected as a Democrat to the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal, Division B, based in Lake Charles, on which he served from January 1, 2005, until his swearing in for the Supreme Court seat on January 1, 2017. In the 2004 contest, he defeated a Republican candidate, Paul deMahy, 82 to 18 percent.[4]
He ran unopposed for another ten-year term on the circuit court inn in 2014. From 1995 to 2004, he was a Democratic state district court judge.[3]
On February 15, 2018, the Louisiana Secretary of State listed Genovese as a "No Party" voter, having defected from the Republican Party since his election to the Supreme Court.[5]
