Jerry Ray Kibbons (July 24, 1930 – June 6, 2015) was a Southern Baptist clergyman who taught Christian Studies and history at Campbellsville University (formerly Campbellsville College), from 1964 until his retirement in 1992.
One of two sons of Goley Carson "GC" Kibbons (1904-1967) and the former Virginia Mae Burton (1909-1991), Kibbons was born in Villa Ridge in Franklin County in east central Missouri, where his parents are interred at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.[1] Kibbons graduated from Ritenour Sr. High School in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of eighteen, he was licensed to preach in Villa Ridge and ordained to the ministry at Galena in Stone County in southwestern Missouri, two years later. He graduated with an associate's degree from Bolivar Baptist College in Bolivar in Polk County in southwestern Missouri. He obtained bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Central Missouri, then known as Central Missouri State College, located in Warrensburg in Johnson County in west central Missouri. He earned a second master's degree from the Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary at Fort Worth, Texas, and a Doctor of Ministries from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.[2]
Kibbons was a pastor in Missouri and did supply preaching in Missouri and Kentucky. A member of the Salem Baptist Church in Campbellsville, he volunteered as minister of education and taught a men's Sunday school as long as his health permitted. In 1964, he joined the faculty at Campbellsville University, then known as Campbellsville College. He developed the in-service guidance program at the college and remained there for twenty-eight years until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1992. For several years he was director of missions for the Taylor County Baptist Association. For eleven years, he was a member of the Campbellsville City Council, a Democrat in a non-partisan post.[2]
In 1951, Kibbons wed his wife, the former Billie Sue Scott (born June 14, 1929), an artist[3] who is a graduate and former employee of Campbellsville University. The two who are borh pictured in this article celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary[4] a month before his death at the age of eighty-four in Lexington in Fayette County, Kentucky. There are three Kibbons children, Kathy Kibbons Brewer (born 1954) and husband, Larry, of Sturgis, Kentucky; Steven Ray Kibbons (born 1957) and wife, Terri, of Hartford, Kentucky, and Lynn Kibbons Collins (born 1960), a physical therapist in Richmond, Kentucky, and her husband, Thomas, along with six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is interred at Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.[2]
The Kibbons Family International Scholarship has been established in his name at Campbellsville University. [5]
