Jiang Jingguo (Chiang Ching-kuo) (1910-1988) was the son of Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek) and served as President of the Republic of China between 1978 and his death. During his presidency he gradually dismantled some of the autocratic contols previously maintained by the Guomindang government; in 1987 he abolished martial law and permitted visits from Taiwan to the Communist-controlled Chinese mainland. He was succeeded in office by Li Denghui (Lee Teng-hui).
