Jumping the Shark is an expression that is used to refer to that point where a television show should have ended, but is continuing on anyway. The implication is that the freshness and the originality of the show has expired and it is a shell of its former self; it is only living off of its past name and reputation.

The term was coined to refer to an episode of Happy Days where The Fonz jumps a shark.
