Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. in New York City, 1947-) is a famous former basketball player, coach, and author. Originally drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks (with which he won his first title, only three years after being drafted and four years after the team was formed), he is best known for playing with the Los Angeles Lakers for 14 seasons, winning several titles for them.

He became most famous for his "skyhook" shot, which was difficult to block because of his 7'2" height and his ability to shoot the hook from either side, with either the left or right hand; the shot would ultimately lead to him becoming the all-time NBA scoring leader.

He also played himself in the popular comedy Airplane.

He is a Muslim, having converted in the late 1960s from Catholicism. In November 2009, he announced that he had leukemia.
