Katharine Houghton Hepburn, sometimes known as Kate Hepburn (May 12, 1907 – June 29, 2003), was a four-time Oscar-winning actress. Home-schooled in Connecticut for much of her teen years, she later attended Bryn Mawr College, one of the "Seven Sisters" institutions located to the west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at which developed an interest in acting and her odd accent is sometimes attributed to that college. She first appeared on radio and then in many film roles, including nine with co-star, Spencer Bonaventure Tracy (1900-1967), with whom she had an affair and relationship from 1941 until his death,[1] despite how Tracy was a married man.
Hepburn was outspokenly supportive of abortion.[2]
A politically liberal and self-described atheist, Hepburn had no children herself, divorced at the age of 26, and had a longtime affair with the married actor Spencer Tracy. She often insisted on wearing pants rather than a dress, and was not a glamorous box-office draw. Hepburn was often disliked by her colleagues and others.
She won a record (for a performer) 4 Academy Awards for best actress (one was in a tie with Barbra Streisand), all but one in portraying an elderly spinstress, which is what she was for much of her real life. Hepburn had less success as an actress before the age of 60, when some of performances were criticized.
Hepburn is also remembered for her co-starring roles with John Wayne in the 1975 film Rooster Cogburn and the 1981 picture about an aging couple, On Golden Pond, with Henry Fonda.
