Kindergarten is a form of preschool, attended by children below elementary school age, usually at about 5 years of age and prior to entering first grade or the equivalent. The name "kindergarten" originated in Germany, and means child-garden (if translated literally). Many parents choose not to send their children to kindergarten and instead take care of them at home—Logically, they believe that interactions between parents and young children are beneficial to growth and development (this can be viewed as a precursor to homeschooling).
