Kristi Lynn Noem (born November 30, 1971) is the pro-life, movement conservative governor of South Dakota, serving since January 5, 2019. Previously, she served as the Republican representative for the United States House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019. Noem was first elected in 2010, defeating incumbent Democrat Stephanie Herseth Sandlin. Right before being elected to Congress, she served as the Assistant Majority Leader[2] while representing the 6th district in the South Dakota House of Representatives.

U.S. House of Representatives

2010 campaign

Noem became a fundraising star for the GOP, raising more campaign cash than any other Republican challenger for U.S. House.[3]

My experiences as a wife, mother, farmer, rancher, small business owner, and South Dakotan have taught me fundamental truths that will ensure I will remain steadfast in my resolve to do the people’s will.

Governor of South Dakota

In 2019, Noem signed a bill into law establishing constitutional carry,[4][5][6] as well as several pro-life bills.[7] On March 20, 2019, Noem signed a bill into law protecting intellectual diversity on college campuses.[8] She also signed a bill requiring public schools to display the national motto "In God We Trust."[9] She did however refuse to sign a bill that would prohibit biological boys from competing in women's sports.[10] Although due to pressure, she reversed that decision.

Coronavirus response

Despite the impact that the coronavirus outbreak had on South Dakota, Gov. Noem refused to enact a stay-at-home order, correctly pointing out the nonsensical arguments backing it, as well as asserting the importance of protecting individual liberties and freedom.[11] Unlike Democrat governors such as New York's Andrew Cuomo, Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer and Wisconsin's Tony Evers, she has also never imposed or enforced a face mask mandate on the people of South Dakota, stating that she did not want to approach such a mandate for the sake of making people "feel good",[12] as well as pointing out that she wanted to see science and data concerning mask wearing that would prove that doing so would slow the spread of the CCP flu pandemic,[13] which has actually shown not to be effective based on research into mask wearing.[14]

Personal life

Noem is a rancher, a mother of three, and a hunter. She and her family lives on a ranch where they raise Angus cattle and show Quarter Horses. Noem has worked the family farm for 17 years, owned and operated a hunting operation, and helped manage the family restaurant.[15][16]
