Laurence Stephen Lowry (L S Lowry) (1887-1976) was an artist born in Stretford, Lancashire, north-west England. Although classically trained, his best known works are painted in a naive style - often referred to as 'matchstick men' - which depicted urban life in industrial Lancashire (especially Salford) in the early twentieth century. Lowry also painted a large number of works in and around Sunderland.
