Lal Masjid (Urdu: لال مسج, "Red Mosque") is a Salafist mosque in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The mosque is known for it's radical teachings. Recently, the leaders of the mosque (Abdul Rashid Ghazi and Maulana Abdul Aziz) authorized their students to attempt to enforce a strict, Taliban-like Islamic law on Islamabad. This was to be accomplished by kidnapping and murdering dhimmis, apostates, and prostitutes.[1]

Near the beginning of the year 2007, Pakistani Army Rangers (a paramilitary group) began a siege of the mosque, and were soon assisted by Pakistani police forces. On July 3, a major gunbattle erupted near the mosque, resulting in 10 dead (9 of those being civilians, killed by the radicals) and approximately 150 injured.[2]

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has generally been lenient with those in the mosque, offering $83 and free education to any student who surrendered from the mosque. Maulana Abdul Aziz was captured while attempting to flee the mosque in a burqa, a cowardly way for a leader to be incapacitated. Following his capture, approximately 1,200 students surrendered.[3]
