A code of rules that all people in a certain society must follow. Laws are generally defined through examination of the social mores of a society in an attempt to optimize the happiness of the people served by the society. It can be shown that evolution shaped humans' definitions of law, for example regarding murder. Humans disallow murder because it is overall negative for the society as a whole through their reproductive fitness. Similarly, most regulations improve quality of life for humans in the long run.
